Reis naar katrineholm / Trip to Katrineholm

If I would tell you that I accidentally traveled to Katrineholm, you might wonder how that happened. Don't worry, here's the full story.

Donderdag, 24 Augustus 2017, rond 14:00
Thursday, August 24th 2017, around 14:00
It's thursday afternoon. The school day has just ended, and I decide to walk back to Skövde Resecentrum to take the first train back to Töreboda from there. I look at the signs in the station, and I see that there's a train going in the direction of Stockholm going in not too long. As far as my knowledge goes (at the time), all trains going in the direction of Stockholm stop in Töreboda too, except for the MTRExpress. So, I get on the train without a worry and I find a place to sit down.

It seemed fun to me to follow the route with a GPS-tracker app, so I could see the route on the map once I got home. Coincidentally, this app also includes a speed meter that updates your speed live. The train starts to move and I see the counter go up.

50 km/u... 100 km/u... 150 km/u... 200 km/u...
50 km/h... 100 km/h... 150 km/h... 200 km/h...

Slowly I see Töreboda getting closer on the map, and I think to myself "It should start slowing down right about now"

And indeed, the counter goes back to 180 km/h, then 150 km/h, then dangerously close to the station in Töreboda verrrry slowly down towards 140 km/h, and...

woooooooosh

It takes some realization time, but eventually I realize that I've just gone completely past my destination. The next station with any chance at all that the train is going to stop there is Laxå.

trein: nooooope

Okay, we've passed Laxå as well, but there's a decent chance that the train will stop in Hallsberg I think.

trein: niet vandaag mijn beste vriend
train: not today my dear friend

Eventually the train finally gives up in Katrineholm, where it finally comes to a full stop. As a short illustration of how far away this is from where I was trying to go:
Interesting fact of the day: Katrineholm is roughly halfway between Skövde and Stockholm.
I bought a sandwich on the station in Katrineholm, en then I took the first (in +/- 1 hour) train back, with a single stopover (another extra hour) in Hallsberg.

a) Dat broodje was best wel lekker
Despite everything I see this trip as a success, because:
a) That sandwich tasted pretty good
b) check out this photo I made of the station in Katrineholm:

One more thing about a different subject: I'm in the fourth week of school right now, this is what an average week looks like at the moment:

Maandag / Monday
The day starts with 'Bild och Form', which is basically art class. Pretty chill start of the week. BoF is followed by Matematik 2b, which is mathematics but in Swedish. With fascinating words such as 'uttrycket', 'olika', and 'förenkla'. Matematik is followed by half an hour of 'Klasstid', which is like the Swedish equivalent of mentor hour (is that even a thing in English?). Finally I have Engelska, one of the few lessons I can actually understand.

Dinsdag / Tuesday
Tuesday is the day I can sleep for a long time. My first lesson starts at 12:10, this is 'Svenska som andra språk' (Swedish as second language), together with other exchange students in the school. There are people from the Netherlands (only me), Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and Brazil. The only other lesson I have this day is Tyska (German). If I put some effort into it I can understand this lessons completely as well, in opposition to Klasstid.

Woensdag / Wednesday
Wednesday is the same as monday, except there's no Klasstid, and English starts a bit earlier.

Donderdag / Thursday
Thursday starts with Tyska, and then I have about 3 hours until 'Idrott och hälsa' (Sport and health). Usually I take my laptop with me to school on thursday so I've got something to do.

Vrijdag / Friday
On friday I only have Matematik.
Bit of a disappointing end of the week, but soon I'm going to try to talk to my mentor about whether I can follow a few more lessons than I do right now.

Umeå + Introductiedag / Introduction Day

I think I wrote something about "Future posts about Umeå" in my last post. However, I didn't consider for a single moment that I wouldn't have any internet connection anywhere in Umeå. So, I'll combine the whole story into a single post.

This was the only stopover in the way to Umeå and back, the station in Hallsberg. Although it's not very clear to see in the photo, it was already starting to get dark at this point. The biggest portion of the remaining 11 hours to Umeå was at night, sadly I wasn't able to fall asleep in the train.
This was the view from the house in Trollberget. We had nice weather almost every day, except for the day we went back to the south. We walked through the town a few times, and on one of the walks I found something quite interesting.
This overgrown car was standing behind one of the houses. I thought it had a nice mysterious atmosphere to it, so I took a photo. On one of the last days we went to a lake. I made a 360-degree panorama at the edge of the lake, and with an app that lets you make mini-planets out of panoramas I made the following image:

Today there was a kind of introduction day before school starts. We were divided into groups and had to complete certain tasks for a score as high as possible. In one of the activities, you had to write the first letter of your name on a piece of paper, and then make as many Swedish words as possible with the other members of your group. The group with the highest score at the end got a voucher for the cafetaria in school, sadly our group didn't win.

Tomorrow I'm going to pick up my study books and I'll have my first lessons. I'm very curious!

De trein naar Umeå / The train to Umeå

This evening the travel to Umeå begins. It's a 12 hour long trip which is longer than the Netherlands stacked on top of itself three times. As a comparison, Umeå is about as far north as Reykjavik, Iceland. I'll stay in the north for about a week, and then we will take the train back to Töreboda.
This blog post stays quite short, because I don't really have a clear idea of what I'm going to do in Umeå yet. I suppose it's more like an announcement for future posts about Umeå.

Reis naar Töreboda / Travel to Töreboda

Gisteren ben ik hier in Töreboda aangekomen. De reis hierheen ging als volgt:
1. Vlucht van Schiphol naar Stockholm

Yesterday I arrived here in Töreboda. The trip here went as follows:
1. Flight from Schiphol to Stockholm
2. Wait a couple hours for the next flight in Stockholm
3. Flight from Stockholm to Göteborg
4. Wait an hour for the train to Skövde
5. Train from Göteborg to Skövde
6. Car from Skövde to Töreboda
If this doesn't sound like the most inefficient route possible yet, maybe it's better visible on this map:
[See map above]
One of the first things I noticed when I arrived in Göteborg was the amount of hills. But to be fair, compared to the Netherlands every other country on earth is just one big collection of mountains. By the way, I just noticed that Czechia is completely missing on this map, I hope any Czech readers can forgive me for that.

At the moment it's raining quite a bit here, so a photo of the area isn't going to look very appealing. I'll definitely make a couple of photos when the weather is a bit better though.

Introductie / Introduction

Hallo!
Simon

Hello! My name is Simon, and I'm from Suwâld, a pretty tiny village in Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands. I'm going to Sweden in about a week, and I'll be staying there for a little under a year. I'm going to try my best to keep this blog updated during my time in Sweden. Sometimes I'll make a drawing, and sometimes I'll just write something. I'll write the posts in both Dutch and English, to maximize the number of people who can read it. And who knows, maybe the last post will be in Swedish too.
I hope you find this blog interesting enough to return once it does contain more than one post.
See you later,
Simon
